Duke GPA Calculator

Understanding the GPA System at Duke University

Duke University uses a standard 4.0 GPA scale to calculate undergraduate grade point averages. However, it’s important to know that Duke’s official transcripts do not include a cumulative GPA. Professors assign letter grades for courses, and the Registrar calculates a term GPA behind the scenes for internal purposes—like academic standing and honors eligibility.

Still, students can estimate their GPA using the following grade scale.

Duke University Grade Scale

Letter GradeGPA Value
A4.0
A−3.7
B+3.3
B3.0
B−2.7
C+2.3
C2.0
C−1.7
D+1.3
D1.0
D−0.7
F0.0

Grades of P (Pass) and Z (No Credit) do not affect your GPA. You may see these in pass/fail courses or independent studies.

GPA Calculation Notes

While Duke doesn’t show a cumulative GPA on your transcript, you can calculate it using this method:

  1. Convert each course grade to its GPA value.
  2. Multiply the GPA value by the course’s credit hours to get “quality points.”
  3. Add up all the quality points.
  4. Divide the total quality points by the total number of graded credit hours.

👉 Example:
If you took 4 courses (each 3 credits) and received A, B+, B, and C:

  • A (4.0) × 3 = 12
  • B+ (3.3) × 3 = 9.9
  • B (3.0) × 3 = 9
  • C (2.0) × 3 = 6
    Total quality points = 36.9
    Total credit hours = 12
    GPA = 36.9 / 12 = 3.075

Special Grading Policies by School or Program

Duke doesn’t vary its GPA scale across departments, but some schools within Duke have unique grading expectations. For example:

  • Pratt School of Engineering and Trinity College of Arts & Sciences follow the same grading system but may vary in grade distributions.
  • Graduate and professional schools like Duke Law, Fuqua School of Business, and the School of Medicine have distinct grading systems that are not always on a 4.0 scale.

Always check with your program or advisor if you’re in a specialized school.

Honors and Academic Standing

Duke does recognize GPA for internal purposes like:

  • Dean’s List: Term GPA of 3.5 or higher with at least four graded courses (and no incomplete or failing grades).
  • Latin Honors at graduation:
    • cum laude: Top 25%
    • magna cum laude: Top 10%
    • summa cum laude: Top 5%

These thresholds vary by graduating class and are based on GPA rankings within the major.
