University of Alabama GPA Calculator

Use this University of Alabama GPA calculator to estimate your undergraduate institutional UA GPA with UA’s official plus/minus grade values, including A+ at 4.33 quality points. You can calculate your current GPA, add planned courses for a projection, and test a target GPA while keeping repeat and transfer rules separate from the standard calculation.

How to use the University of Alabama GPA calculator

Enter your previous UA GPA and GPA hours if you want to build on an existing cumulative record, or leave both fields blank and enter completed UA courses from scratch. For each course, add the semester hours and final grade. Open Planned Courses to estimate a future GPA, or use the target tool to see the average you would need over a chosen number of future hours.

Important: This calculator is for the undergraduate institutional UA GPA. The University also uses an Overall GPA that can include accepted transfer grades. Do not add transfer grades to this institutional calculation as if they were UA courses.

University of Alabama GPA scale

UA undergraduate courses use plus and minus grades. A+ is worth 4.33 quality points per semester hour, but the University states that an undergraduate cumulative GPA cannot exceed 4.0.

GradeGrade points
A+4.33
A4.00
A-3.67
B+3.33
B3.00
B-2.67
C+2.33
C2.00
C-1.67
D+1.33
D1.00
D-0.67
F0.00

Grades such as P, W and NC do not enter the undergraduate GPA calculation. An unresolved IN is non-punitive while it remains incomplete, but it normally changes to F if it is not resolved by the University deadline.

A+ rule: Keep A+ as 4.33 when calculating quality points. The calculator then applies UA’s stated 4.0 maximum to the cumulative GPA result.

How UA calculates GPA

For each GPA-bearing course, multiply the course’s semester hours by the grade-point value. Add the quality points from all counted courses, then divide by the total GPA hours.

GPA = total quality points ÷ total GPA hours

For example, a 3-credit A+ earns 12.99 quality points and a 3-credit B earns 9.00. Together, that is 21.99 quality points over 6 GPA hours, or a 3.665 GPA.

UA reports GPA calculations to the third decimal. A failing F contributes zero quality points but its GPA hours still remain in the denominator.

Repeated courses at Alabama

Repeating a course does not erase the earlier attempt from the GPA. UA says the most recent attempt counts for earned hours, while previous attempts continue to count in the GPA calculation.

Because the shared Repeat Impact tool is designed for grade-replacement policies, it is disabled for Alabama. To estimate the GPA effect, enter each graded attempt as a separate completed course. Use your official degree audit or advisor for earned-hour and degree-credit questions.

Transfer grades and the Overall GPA

Accepted transfer coursework is posted to the UA record, and the grades are included in the University’s Overall GPA. Those transfer grades are not included in the institutional UA GPA.

That distinction matters for academic standing and other policies. This calculator stays on the institutional UA record rather than guessing how an outside institution’s grading system should map into a course-by-course UA calculation.

Academic standing and graduation GPA

UA uses the institutional GPA for its undergraduate Scholastic Progress Standard. The minimum required UA GPA rises with overall earned hours:

Overall earned hoursMinimum cumulative UA GPA
0–301.50
31–601.70
61–901.90
91+2.00

A cumulative UA GPA of 2.00 or higher is good standing under the University-wide standard. Students below 2.00 may be on Academic Warning or, depending on prior status and the applicable minimum, suspension. Colleges and programs can impose additional continuation requirements.

For graduation, UA generally requires at least a 2.0 GPA for all work attempted. Transfer students must also earn at least a 2.0 on work attempted at UA, and students need at least a C average in work applying to the major. Some schools, colleges and programs require more.

Dean’s List and President’s List

The Dean’s List is based on the specific term rather than cumulative GPA. Undergraduate students generally need at least a 3.5 term GPA with a minimum of 12 credit hours earned in UA coursework during the term. The President’s List recognizes students who meet the Dean’s List requirements with a 4.0 term GPA.

Financial aid GPA is a separate calculation

Federal financial-aid Satisfactory Academic Progress is not determined from the calculator result alone. UA’s SAP review includes an overall GPA that incorporates institutional and transfer work, a completion-rate requirement, and a maximum timeframe.

Use the financial-aid office’s SAP rules for aid eligibility rather than treating the institutional UA GPA shown here as a complete SAP decision.

Graduate students use different grading rules

UA graduate courses use A, B, C, D and F without plus/minus grades. Graduate students generally must maintain a 3.0 graduate GPA, and transferred graduate courses accepted for UA graduate credit are posted as P and excluded from the graduate GPA.

Because those rules differ materially from the undergraduate system, this calculator should not be used as an official graduate GPA calculator.

Academic Second Opportunity

Eligible former undergraduates who have been separated from UA for at least three academic years may petition for Academic Second Opportunity. If approved, prior UA work remains on the transcript, but those previous institutional grades are removed from the GPA calculation under the policy.

That is a record-level recalculation, not an ordinary repeat rule, so it is not automated here.

University of Alabama GPA FAQs

Does an A+ give you a 4.33 GPA at Alabama?

An A+ earns 4.33 quality points per semester hour, but UA states that the highest undergraduate cumulative GPA is 4.0. The extra A+ quality points can still affect the arithmetic within the record without making the official cumulative GPA exceed 4.0.

Does an F count in the UA GPA?

Yes. An F is worth 0 quality points, but its GPA hours count in the denominator. That includes an F earned in a course a student elected to take pass/fail.

Does a P affect GPA at Alabama?

No. A P does not affect the undergraduate GPA. Pass/fail eligibility and course limits are separate academic rules.

Does an incomplete count in GPA at Alabama?

An IN is non-punitive while unresolved. UA says it normally must be resolved by the end of the next regular semester or it changes to F, which would then be punitive.

Does retaking a class replace the old grade at Alabama?

No. Previous attempts remain in the GPA calculation. The most recent attempt is the one used for earned hours, so GPA treatment and earned-credit treatment are not the same thing.

Do transfer grades count in the University of Alabama GPA?

Transfer grades accepted by UA are included in the separate Overall GPA, but not in the institutional UA GPA. This calculator is designed for the institutional GPA.

What GPA do I need to stay in good standing at Alabama?

A 2.00 cumulative UA GPA is good standing under the University-wide standard. UA also has lower Scholastic Progress Standard thresholds from 1.50 to 2.00 based on overall earned hours, which affect warning and suspension decisions.

What GPA do I need to graduate from the University of Alabama?

The general undergraduate requirement is at least a 2.0 GPA for all work attempted, with additional UA-GPA and major requirements in applicable cases. Individual programs may require higher GPAs.

What GPA do I need to transfer to Alabama?

UA’s published transfer admission requirement is a 2.0 overall college GPA, along with the applicable transferable-hour requirements. Applicants with fewer transferable hours may also need to satisfy freshman admission requirements.
