Important: An F is different from an excluded mark. A 4-credit F adds four GPA hours and zero quality points, which lowers GPA. An S, I, W, or transfer notation contributes neither GPA hours nor quality points.
Northeastern GPA formula and example
Use this formula:
GPA = total quality points ÷ total GPA-bearing semester hours
Suppose you earn an A in a 4-credit course and a B+ in another 4-credit course. The A earns 16.000 quality points, while the B+ earns 13.332. Your combined GPA is 29.332 ÷ 8 = 3.6665, which is about 3.667 for planning purposes.
If you already have a cumulative GPA, the calculator first converts that prior record into estimated quality points by multiplying your previous GPA by your previous GPA-bearing semester hours. It then adds the new courses you enter.
How repeated courses affect GPA at Northeastern
For a nonrepeatable course that you retake, Northeastern uses the most recent grade in the overall GPA. The earlier grade remains on the transcript but is marked as excluded from the GPA, while the included retake is identified separately.
