How Emory College calculates GPA
Emory College uses credit-hour-weighted quality points. Multiply each GPA-bearing course’s credit hours by the grade value, add the quality points, then divide by the total GPA-bearing credit hours.
Quick answer: A 4-credit A earns 16.0 quality points. A 3-credit B+ earns 9.9. Together, 25.9 quality points divided by 7 GPA hours gives a 3.700 GPA.

Which Emory grades count in GPA?
Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory courses do not enter the Emory College GPA. An S earns academic credit without quality points, while U earns no academic credit and is also excluded from GPA. Transfer, transient, and cross-registered courses
Domestic transient study can earn Emory credit when the course and grade meet College requirements, but the outside grade is not posted as an Emory grade and does not enter the Emory GPA. ARCHE cross-registration is similarly recorded as credit rather than an outside letter grade.

Repeated courses at Emory
Current Emory College academic-standing policy confirms that repeated courses affect GPA and degree progression, but the public policy reviewed for this calculator does not specify enough detail to safely automate a universal replacement or count-all repeat formula.

Emory academic standing and graduation GPA
For current Emory College academic standing, students need both a cumulative Emory GPA of at least 2.00 and a term GPA of at least 2.00, along with the College’s degree-progression requirements. Falling short can lead to Academic Warning and, after continued failure to meet standards, suspension or dismissal.
For the BA or BS, current graduation requirements include at least a 2.0 GPA for letter-graded work and at least a 2.0 average in the major. Students who matriculated before Fall 2020 can be subject to a historical graduation-GPA rule, so older records should be checked against the catalog note that applies to their cohort.
Financial aid GPA is a separate standard
Emory’s financial-aid Satisfactory Academic Progress policy is not identical to College academic standing. For Emory College, the published SAP cumulative-GPA minimum is 1.5 during the freshman year and 2.0 during the sophomore year and afterward; the policy also includes completion-rate and maximum-timeframe requirements. There is no undergraduate current-term GPA requirement in that SAP policy.
Do not use the calculator alone to decide aid eligibility. Financial Aid applies the full SAP policy, including attempted and completed hours.
Emory honors and GPA
Emory College’s Honors in Course recognition is based on class rank, not a permanent fixed GPA cutoff. The top 30% of graduates receive Latin designations, and the GPA ranges are recalculated for each spring graduating class. For the Class of 2026, the published ranges are 3.993–4.000 for summa cum laude, 3.961–3.992 for magna cum laude, and 3.909–3.960 for cum laude; future cutoffs can change.
The separate research-based Emory College Honors Program normally requires a 3.70 cumulative GPA. Students with at least a 3.45 may have a petition path, subject to the program’s rules and departmental approval.
Emory College is not the same as every Emory school
This calculator is for the standard Emory College undergraduate record. Emory Law uses a different grading system that includes A+ at 4.3, and Laney Graduate School and Rollins School of Public Health publish their own grade sets and academic requirements. Do not apply the Emory College profile to those records.
