Carnegie Mellon GPA Calculator

Carnegie Mellon University undergraduates use a unit-weighted 4.0 Quality Point Average (QPA) system: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, and R=0. Use this calculator to estimate your current or cumulative QPA, add planned courses, and test a target QPA while correctly excluding non-factorable grades and keeping every graded repeat attempt in the calculation.

How Carnegie Mellon calculates undergraduate QPA

CMU calls its GPA a Quality Point Average (QPA). For each factorable course, multiply the course units by the grade’s quality-point value. Add those quality points and divide by the total factorable units.

Quick formula: QPA = total quality points ÷ total factorable units.

Undergraduate gradeQuality points per unitQPA treatment
A4.0Counts
B3.0Counts
C2.0Counts
D1.0Counts
R0.0Counts; factorable units remain in the denominator
P—Non-factorable
N—Non-factorable
O—Non-factorable
W—Non-factorable
I—Non-factorable while incomplete
AD—Non-factorable transfer/exam credit notation

Undergraduate final grades use whole letters rather than a plus/minus point scale. If an undergraduate receives a plus/minus grade in a graduate-level course, Enrollment Services converts it to the corresponding undergraduate letter grade for the undergraduate record.

Worked QPA example

Suppose you earn an A in a 12-unit course and a B in a 9-unit course. The A contributes 48 quality points and the B contributes 27, for 75 quality points over 21 factorable units.

75 ÷ 21 = 3.571 QPA.

An R works differently from a P or N. An R contributes zero quality points but its factorable units still remain in the QPA denominator, so it can lower your QPA. P and N contribute neither quality points nor factorable units.

Pass/no pass, incomplete, withdrawal, and audit grades

For the normal undergraduate pass/no pass option, work that would earn A through D is recorded as P; work below D is recorded as N. Neither P nor N is factored into QPA. O audits, W withdrawals, and I incompletes are also non-factorable.

An incomplete can later be replaced by a permanent grade. When that happens, use the permanent transcript grade rather than continuing to treat the course as an I.

Spring 2026 note: CMU temporarily broadened pass/no pass elections for Spring 2026. The calculator’s arithmetic treatment is unchanged: recorded P/N grades are non-factorable. Degree-requirement consequences of that temporary policy should be checked against your record and advisor.

Repeated courses at Carnegie Mellon

CMU does not use ordinary grade replacement for repeated courses. All grades for a repeated course remain on the transcript and are calculated in QPA, whether the first attempt was passing or failing.

That is why the calculator’s Repeat Impact replacement tool is disabled for CMU. Enter each graded attempt as its own completed row. If you repeat a course you already passed, CMU normally counts only one set of units toward graduation requirements even though both grades remain in QPA; undergraduate approval is required to repeat an already-passed course.

Transfer credit and cross-registration

Ordinary courses transferred from another institution are recorded without the external grade and do not enter Carnegie Mellon QPA. The AD notation used for approved transfer or examination credit is non-factorable.

University cross-registration is different: courses taken through CMU’s cross-registration program have grades recorded and are factored into QPA. Use the grade and units shown on your Carnegie Mellon record rather than importing an outside institution’s grading scale yourself.

Undergraduate and graduate QPA are different

Different grading system: This calculator is for the undergraduate record. Carnegie Mellon graduate students use a 4.33 grading scale with plus/minus grades, and home-college rules can change which grades or courses apply. CMU also calculates undergraduate and graduate cumulative QPAs separately.

Do not use the undergraduate 4.0 calculator to estimate a graduate QPA. Graduate program minimums, pass/fail rules, and course applicability can vary by college or program.

QPA thresholds students often confuse

A QPA calculation tells you the arithmetic result; it does not by itself decide standing, graduation, aid, honors, or program eligibility. Those rules can use different populations and additional requirements.

PurposeCurrent published context
Financial-aid SAP, first-year undergraduate1.75 cumulative QPA plus 80% completion rate
Financial-aid SAP, upperclass undergraduate2.00 cumulative QPA plus 80% completion rate
University Honors3.50 cumulative QPA under the university-honors rules
College/program graduation and standingOften includes a 2.00 QPA standard, but college and program rules can add requirements

Always check the policy for your home college and degree program before treating a QPA threshold as an eligibility decision.

Frequently asked questions

Does Carnegie Mellon use GPA or QPA?

Carnegie Mellon commonly calls the calculation QPA, or Quality Point Average. For undergraduate courses, it is calculated from quality points divided by factorable units.

Is an R the same as a non-factorable grade?

No. An R is worth 0 quality points and its factorable units count in the denominator. P, N, O, W, I, and AD are non-factorable under the undergraduate grading standard.

Does Carnegie Mellon use plus and minus grades for undergraduates?

The undergraduate final grading scale is A, B, C, D, and R. If an undergraduate receives a plus/minus grade while taking a graduate-level course, it is converted to the corresponding undergraduate letter grade on the undergraduate record.

Does pass/no pass affect my QPA?

A recorded P or N does not factor into QPA. A P can still carry passed units, while an N carries no passed units, so QPA treatment and degree progress are separate questions.

Does repeating a failed course replace the R?

No. CMU states that all grades for repeated courses are calculated in QPA. Enter both attempts in the calculator rather than replacing the earlier grade.

Do transfer grades count in Carnegie Mellon QPA?

Ordinary external transfer grades do not. Approved transfer work is recorded without the external grade and is not used in QPA calculations.

Do cross-registration courses count in QPA?

Courses taken through Carnegie Mellon’s cross-registration program have grades recorded and are factored into QPA. Use the CMU transcript result for the calculation.

What QPA do I need for financial aid?

CMU’s February 2026 financial-aid SAP policy lists a 1.75 cumulative QPA after the first undergraduate year and 2.00 for upperclass undergraduates, along with an 80% completion-rate requirement. Financial-aid eligibility includes more than QPA alone.

Can graduate students use this calculator?

Not for an official-style estimate. Graduate students use a different 4.33 scale and program-specific rules, so this profile intentionally covers the undergraduate record only.
