What a CGPA to percentage converter does and when you need it

To convert CGPA to percentage, multiply it by the factor your board or university sets: CBSE uses CGPA × 9.5, so an 8.2 CGPA is 77.9%. This calculator applies that rule, VTU’s rule or a plain × 10, so your number matches what an admissions office or employer expects.

You need it when a job portal, a master’s application or a scholarship form has a percentage box but your marksheet only shows a CGPA. It also handles a GPA out of 4 with a simple proportion. It doesn’t build a CGPA from course grades and credits; the Cumulative GPA (CGPA) Calculator does that.

How to convert CGPA into percentage with the calculator

Type your CGPA

Enter it under CGPA or SGPA, like 8.2. Naming the row under Semester (optional) helps when you convert more than one.

Choose your formula

Pick the rule under Formula in the line above the rows. CBSE: CGPA × 9.5 is selected until you change it.

Add more semesters

Press + Add semester for each SGPA. Every row gets its own Percentage, and the result converts their average.

CGPA to percentage formula and a worked example

Percentage = CGPA × 9.5

CGPA

Cumulative grade point average on a 10-point scale.

9.5

CBSE’s multiplier for an indicative percentage of marks.

SGPA

One semester’s grade point average; several are averaged first.

CBSE set this rule when it moved Class X results to grades: overall indicative percentage equals 9.5 times CGPA. Say your three SGPAs are 7.8, 8.4 and 8.4 and you use the CBSE formula. The steps below follow what the calculator does.

StepMathResult
Add the three SGPAs7.8 + 8.4 + 8.424.6
Plain average (overall CGPA)24.6 ÷ 38.2
Apply the CBSE multiplier8.2 × 9.577.9%

The calculator shows 77.9% as your Overall percentage, with the line “Overall CGPA 8.2: 8.2 × 9.5 (CBSE formula).” Below it, Semesters reads 3 and Range reads 74.1–79.8%. The rows themselves read 74.1%, 79.8% and 79.8%.

How to read your CGPA in percentage, with a conversion chart

The big number is the percentage for the formula you picked. With one row it’s labelled Percentage; with several it’s Overall percentage, and the CGPA beside it is the average the calculator converted.

Here is how some often-searched CGPAs convert under each 10-point rule. VTU’s figure always sits below CBSE’s, by 4 points at a 7.0 and by 2.5 points at a 10.

Write the percentage on a form only after you know which rule the reader accepts. If the form doesn’t say, quote the CGPA too, for example “8.2 CGPA (77.9% by CBSE formula)”. Open Show how it’s calculated to see every step and copy it into an email if someone asks.

Why the same CGPA gives different percentages

Which rule you use. The same CGPA lands on different percentages. An 8.2 is 77.9% with CBSE’s × 9.5 but 74.5% with VTU’s (8.2 − 0.75) × 10, and 82% where a marksheet says to multiply by 10. Use the rule printed on your marksheet or in your university’s regulations; if there isn’t one, ask the exam section for a conversion certificate.

Your university’s own formula. VTU publishes its formula for the 2015, 2017 and 2018 schemes only, so newer schemes may differ.

Averaging SGPAs versus a credit-weighted CGPA. The calculator averages semesters equally. Your university probably weights each semester by its credits. With a 7.0 SGPA over 24 credits and a 9.0 SGPA over 16 credits, the plain average is 8.0 (76% by CBSE), but the weighted CGPA is 312 ÷ 40 = 7.8 (74.1%). If your marksheet prints a CGPA, enter that single number instead of the SGPAs.

A GPA out of 4. There is no official formula from a 4.0 GPA to a percentage. The 4.0 scale option divides by 4 and multiplies by 100, so 3.0 shows as 75%, 3.2 as 80% and 3.5 as 87.5%. Pick that option before you type a GPA out of 4: under the default CBSE rule, a 3.2 would come out as a misleading 30.4%. Credential evaluators such as WES convert each course grade instead and say grade conversions aren’t mathematically precise.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert CGPA into percentage?

Multiply your CGPA by the number your board or university sets, which is 9.5 for CBSE. VTU students subtract 0.75 first and then multiply by 10. If your marksheet prints a different rule, that rule wins.

What is 7.37 CGPA in percentage?

A 7.37 CGPA is 70.02% with the CBSE formula (7.37 × 9.5). With VTU’s formula it is 66.2%, because (7.37 − 0.75) × 10 = 66.2. Where the marksheet says to multiply by 10, it is 73.7%.

What is 8.98 CGPA in percentage?

An 8.98 CGPA is 85.31% under the CBSE formula and 82.3% under VTU’s. If your university multiplies by 10, it comes to 89.8%.

What is 3.2 CGPA out of 4 in percentage?

By simple proportion, 3.2 out of 4 is 80%, since 3.2 ÷ 4 × 100 = 80. No official body publishes this conversion, so treat it as a rough guide and give the GPA alongside it.

How do I convert percentage to CGPA?

Run your board’s formula backwards. For CBSE, divide the percentage by 9.5, so 76% becomes 8.0. For VTU, divide by 10 and add 0.75, so 72.5% also becomes 8.0.
