GPA Calculation at the University of New Hampshire
At UNH, your GPA (Grade Point Average) is a major reflection of your academic performance. It’s calculated using a simple formula:
GPA = Total Grade Points ÷ Total Credit Hours Attempted
Grade points are determined by multiplying the numerical value of the grade you earned in a course by the number of credit hours that course carries. Only courses taken for a grade count toward your GPA—grades like CR (Credit), P (Pass), W (Withdrawn), and AU (Audit) are excluded.
UNH Undergraduate Grade Scale
Here’s how UNH translates letter grades into grade points:
Letter Grade | Grade Points | Description |
---|---|---|
A | 4.00 | Excellent |
A− | 3.67 | Intermediate Grade |
B+ | 3.33 | Intermediate Grade |
B | 3.00 | Superior |
B− | 2.67 | Intermediate Grade |
C+ | 2.33 | Intermediate Grade |
C | 2.00 | Satisfactory, Competent |
C− | 1.67 | Intermediate Grade |
D+ | 1.33 | Intermediate Grade |
D | 1.00 | Marginal |
D− | 0.67 | Intermediate Grade |
F | 0.00 | Failure, No Credit |
AF | 0.00 | Administrative Failure |
Grades not used in GPA calculations include CR (Credit), P (Pass), W (Withdrawn), AU (Audit), IC (Incomplete Coursework), IA (Continuing Course or Thesis), and IX (Grade not reported by instructor).
GPA Calculation Example
Let’s say you completed the following courses:
- Course 1: 3 credits, Grade A (4.00)
- Course 2: 4 credits, Grade B+ (3.33)
- Course 3: 3 credits, Grade C (2.00)
Here’s how your GPA would be calculated:
- Course 1: 3 × 4.00 = 12.00
- Course 2: 4 × 3.33 = 13.32
- Course 3: 3 × 2.00 = 6.00
Total Grade Points = 12.00 + 13.32 + 6.00 = 31.32
Total Credits = 3 + 4 + 3 = 10
GPA = 31.32 ÷ 10 = 3.13
Departmental GPA Policies
Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics
Students in this college must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.3. If you receive below a C− in any required major course, you must repeat it the following semester. You’re allowed to repeat a maximum of two required courses, each only once. And those repeats must happen at the UNH-Durham campus. Failure to earn at least a C− in the retake means you’ll need to switch majors.
Graduate Programs
Graduate students must earn a B− or better in courses to receive credit. If a student receives below B− in 9 or more credits, they’ll be dismissed from the Graduate School. To graduate, a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is required.
