Each course contributes to GPA in proportion to its credit hours. Grade points are calculated by multiplying the numeric grade value by the course’s credit hours. Courses with more credits have a greater impact on GPA.
How GPA Is Calculated
Official formula:
Total Grade Points ÷ Total GPA Credit Hours = GPA
Example:
A student earns:
- 3 credits of A (4.00 × 3 = 12.00)
- 4 credits of B+ (3.30 × 4 = 13.20)
- 3 credits of C (2.00 × 3 = 6.00)
Total grade points = 31.20
Total GPA credits = 10
GPA = 3.12 (truncated)
Course Repeats or Special GPA Rules
For graduate coursework, when a course is repeated, only the most recent grade is used in the cumulative graduate GPA for academic standing and graduation purposes. Earlier grades remain on the transcript.
Transcript Grades vs GPA Calculations
Some grades appear on the transcript but do not affect GPA. Withdrawal, satisfactory/unsatisfactory, incomplete, and other non-graded symbols are excluded from GPA calculations.
Graduate GPA
Graduate students at the University of Georgia must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 for good standing and graduation. Graduate programs may impose additional requirements. Coursework earning below a C is not accepted toward a graduate program of study.
Common GPA Mistakes Students Make
- Including withdrawal or satisfactory grades in GPA calculations
- Assuming GPA is rounded instead of truncated
- Mixing institutional GPA with overall or transfer GPA
- Using unofficial grade point scales
