UCSB GPA Calculator

Understanding UCSB’s GPA System

At UCSB, your GPA (Grade Point Average) is a numerical snapshot of your academic performance. Each grade you earn is assigned a specific point value, and your GPA is the weighted average of those points based on unit values of your classes.

UCSB calculates several types of GPAs:

  • Quarter GPA – for one specific term
  • Cumulative GPA – all UC courses attempted
  • Major GPA – all upper-division courses in your major
  • UC GPA – only courses taken at UC campuses count

The GPA is used for:

  • Academic standing
  • Graduation eligibility
  • Honors recognition
  • Departmental requirements

Let’s dive into the numbers behind the grades.

P/NPNot calculated
IP, I, W, NRNot calculated
  • P/NP (Pass/No Pass) grades are not factored into your GPA but do impact your academic progress.
  • W (Withdrawal), I (Incomplete), and IP (In Progress) are also non-GPA-impacting.

How GPA is Calculated

Here’s the formula:
GPA = (Total Grade Points) ÷ (Total Units Attempted for Letter Grade)

Example:

  • If you took four 4-unit classes and earned A (4.0), B+ (3.3), A− (3.7), and C (2.0),
  • Your GPA = [(4×4) + (3.3×4) + (3.7×4) + (2.0×4)] ÷ 16 = (16 + 13.2 + 14.8 + 8) ÷ 16 = 3.2

UCSB does not round up GPA. A 3.499 stays a 3.499—close, but not quite honors territory.

Faculty or College-Specific Grading Notes

While UCSB uses the UC-wide standard GPA scale, some departments may have additional rules:

  • College of Engineering: Students must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA in all UC courses, as well as in major-specific coursework, to remain in good standing.
  • College of Creative Studies: Uses narrative evaluations along with traditional grades, but GPA is still computed.
  • College of Letters & Science: No grade inflation—academic probation is triggered if your quarter or cumulative GPA drops below 2.0.

If you’re a double major or switching majors, always double-check your department’s GPA policies, as some upper-division courses count for both GPAs.

Academic Honors at UCSB

Here’s how GPA ties into recognition:

  • Dean’s Honors: Quarter GPA of 3.75+ with at least 12 letter-graded units.
  • College Honors at Graduation:
    • Honors: Top 20% of the college
    • High Honors: Top 10%
    • Highest Honors: Top 2%

Each honors category has a specific GPA cutoff, determined annually by the college.
